Masking Tape Tensile Strength Above 75 N/25mm: Long Pulls Without Breaks

Masking tape is often pulled out in long runs before it is pressed down along an edge, and tensile strength decides whether it snaps halfway. The product page for Lixing Masking Tape lists tensile strength above 75 N/25mm, 180° peel strength above 8 N/25mm and a thickness of 155 ± 10 μm. Buyers and process engineers can check these three values first to judge whether the tape will survive long pulls and come off in one piece.

Long pulls without mid-run breaks

When a full length is drawn along a fixture or board edge and then pressed down, the pull from your hand lands on the paper backing first. The product page states a tensile strength above 75 N/25mm and notes that the tape resists breaking when pulled during application, so long masking runs need fewer restarts.

Removal that lifts the whole strip

At the moment of removal, the force on the backing equals the peel force. The datasheet lower limit for 180° peel is 8 N/25mm and for tensile strength 75 N/25mm, a gap of more than nine times between the two lower limits, which leaves the backing room to lift the full strip. Confirm the real margin with peel values from the same lot; for removal technique, see our notes on clean-removal masking tape.

Conformable crepe paper for sharp coating lines

The tape uses crepe paper coated with a rubber-based pressure-sensitive adhesive. According to the product page, its conformability keeps edges from lifting and it removes without residue, which suits parts that need a clean spray boundary. For edge control during baking, read how to control edges in high-temperature masking.

Data for baking and long holds

The product page lists temperature resistance of 100°C / 40 min, holding power of at least 24 h and initial tack of at least 12 cm. For short-bake electronic masking steps, compare these values with your own conditions; the full table is on the masking tape specification page.

Where it fits

  • Paint masking: pull along an edge to define the spray area
  • Coating protection: cover areas that should stay unpainted
  • Electronic process fixing: temporary holding and masking during processing
  • General industrial masking: surface protection during work

Why width matters for tensile values: σ = F / (b × t)

Engineering stress divides the pulling force by the original cross-sectional area. Formula source: Iowa State University MAT E 2150 lecture, Force & Stress.

σ = F / (b × t)

  • σ: engineering tensile stress, MPa (N/mm²)
  • F: tensile force along the tape length, N
  • b: tape width, mm
  • t: tape thickness, mm

A rating written as N/25mm has already divided F by width. Slit the same tape narrower and the total force it can carry drops in proportion; a nicked end also reduces the effective width, so go gently when pulling narrow strips. Breaking strength and elongation of pressure-sensitive tape are measured under ASTM D3759/D3759M.

Treat this as an engineering model, not a product specification. Crepe paper has creases and a fibre direction, and the stated thickness includes the adhesive, so the load is not uniform. The product page does not list tensile performance after baking, so confirm it with a trial application.

What to prepare before a quote

  • Required width and roll length
  • Surface material, and whether the part is baked, with temperature and time
  • Length of each pull and how the tape will be removed
